Hyundai Reveals Swoopy and Streamlined IONIQ 6 Design | Auto Futures

Hyundai has revealed the very swoopy and streamlined design of its upcoming IONIQ 6 saloon.

The car is designed to be as aerodynamic as possible, with a very impressive drag coefficient of just 0.21, and uses a bunch of sustainable materials in the cabin.

“IONIQ 6 connects an emotional convergence of functionality with aesthetics,” said SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Centre.

“The distinctive streamlined design is the result of close cooperation between engineers and designers, with obsessive attention to detail and customer-centric values at the core. We have created the IONIQ 6 as a mindful cocoon that offers a personalised place for all.”

Perhaps the most important aspect of the IONIQ 6’s design is its slipper profile. The car’s very low drag coefficient is thanks to its low nose, active air flaps at the front, wheel gap reducers, and optional slim digital side mirrors. Similarly, the car has an elliptical wing-inspired spoiler with winglet, slight boat-tail structure, and separation traps on both sides of the rear bumper. The IONIQ 6 even has a covered undercarriage with optimised deflectors and reduced wheel-arch gaps.

Hyundai says that the IONIQ 6 has a “cocoon-shaped interior” which serves as “both a comfortable hideaway and personal space” letting drivers “facilitate a mindful, eco-friendly mobility experience and lifestyle.”

In practice, the car has a modular touchscreen dashboard with a 12-inch full-touch infotainment display and another 12-inch digital instrument cluster. A large centre console provides generous in-car storage.

Dual-colour ambient interior lighting allows users to choose from 64 colours and six dual-colour themes to help all the inhabitants feel relaxed and comfortable. 4-dot interactive pixel lights on the steering wheel, meanwhile, enable easy communication between the driver and vehicle.

The car also gets recycled pigment paint from end-of-life tyres and bamboo charcoal pigment paint. On the inside, depending on the trim level, drivers can get eco-process leather (seats), recycled PET fabric (seats), bio TPO skin (dashboard), bio PET fabric (headliner), bio paint derived from vegetable oils (doors), and recycled fishing net carpet. The fishing net carpet is a first for the IONIQ brand, apparently.

The car’s full world premier will take place next month when Hyundai will reveal full specifications.
